Pla\u00e7a Major<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former open space, once the prelude to a walled town, now stands as an impressive square that links the historic center with modern life.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pla\u00e7a Catalunya now serves as the welcoming point for visitors to Batea<\/strong>. This is nothing new, as centuries ago it was literally the entrance to the village\u2014the main access point for travelers arriving along the road from Tortosa, who would have found a completely walled town.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Ca la Vila<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A building that once presided over the entrance to the town during the Middle Ages and that today houses services for both visitors and the residents of Batea<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ca la Vila was the name given to the town\u2019s main municipal house, originally from the medieval period and now the seat of the town hall. It was expanded during the 16th century and rebuilt during the 19th and 20th centuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Capella Mare de D\u00e9u del Portal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A chapel dedicated to the patron saint of the town, in Baroque style<\/strong>, richly decorated and crowned with a large dome.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Chapel of the Virgin of the Portal was built in 1698. It houses the image of the town\u2019s patron, Our Lady of the Portal, which once stood above the gate that closed Carrer d\u2019En Perera, right next to the chapel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Carrer Major<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main street of the Vila Closa<\/strong>, which provided access to the Church and the Castle through medieval Gothic arcades<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking up the slope of Carrer Major means beginning to enter the old walled town. Notable features include the Gothic arches and arcades from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, which sheltered pedestrians on rainy days and served as shops and workshops for artisan merchants during fair days and the weekly market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
